Why Nobody Cares About Your "Before and After" Photos Anymore

By Liam17 August 20264 min read

Take a look at the Facebook or Instagram page of almost any local tradie, builder, or mechanic. It is usually an endless feed of the exact same thing: a blurry photo of a dirty car part followed by a clean one, or a photo of a half-finished wall followed by a painted one.

Before and after photos used to be the gold standard for local business marketing. Today? They are invisible. Customers scroll straight past them because every single business is posting them.

If you want your content to actually generate leads and build trust, you need to change your approach.

People Buy From People, Not Businesses

Your customers do not really care about the technical details of a brake pad replacement or the specific brand of sealant you use. They care about whether they can trust you not to rip them off.

The best way to build that trust is to show your face. Content that features the business owner or the team working, explaining a problem, or just talking to the camera performs significantly better than static photos of the work itself.

You do not need to be a professional presenter. In fact, being a bit raw and unpolished actually makes you more authentic.

Answer the Questions They Are Already Asking

Instead of just posting a photo of a completed job, use your content to answer the questions your customers are secretly worried about.

If you are a mechanic, make a 30-second video explaining why their steering wheel shakes when they brake. If you are a concreter, explain the difference between a cheap driveway that cracks in a year and one that lasts a decade.

When you educate your customers, you position yourself as the authority. By the time they need the work done, they are not shopping around for quotes — they are coming straight to you.

Show the Process, Not Just the Result

The final result is great, but the process is what proves your quality. Show a time-lapse of your team keeping the worksite clean. Show the care you take in masking off an area before painting. Show the diagnostic tools you use to find a fault in a car.

This proves that you do not cut corners, which is exactly what customers are willing to pay a premium for.

Don't Forget the Call to Action

The biggest mistake businesses make with content is assuming the customer knows what to do next. Every piece of content should tell them exactly how to take the next step.

End your videos or posts with a clear instruction: "If your car is doing this, click the link in our bio to book a free inspection," or "Send us a message with a photo of your driveway for a quick estimate."
