Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Is Better for Automotive Businesses?

By Liam4 June 20256 min read

Every automotive business owner asks the same question: should I be running Google Ads or Meta Ads?

The answer isn't one or the other. They do completely different things, and understanding the difference is the key to not wasting your budget.

    Here's the honest breakdown.

    Google Ads: Capturing Demand

Google Ads are for people who are already looking for you. Someone types 'mechanic Gold Coast' or 'car service Southport' into Google, and your ad shows up at the top of the results.

This is called capturing existing demand. These people have a problem right now and they're actively searching for a solution.

Google Ads work well for automotive businesses because:

    - The intent is high — they're searching because they need a service

    • +You only pay when someone clicks
    • +You can target specific keywords related to your services
    • +It puts you at the top of Google instantly, skipping months of SEO work

The downside? It can get expensive. 'Mechanic Gold Coast' might cost $5–$15 per click, and not every click turns into a call. If your landing page is weak or you don't follow up fast, you'll burn through budget quickly.

    Meta Ads: Creating Demand

Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) are different. Nobody is on Facebook searching for a mechanic. But they're scrolling past content from local businesses, and if your ad catches their attention with a good offer, they'll enquire. We cover this in detail in our Meta Ads for automotive businesses guide.

This is called creating demand. You're reaching people who might need a service soon but aren't actively looking yet.

Meta Ads work well for automotive businesses because:

    - It's cheaper per click than Google Ads (often $1–$3)

    • +You can reach a highly targeted local audience
    • +You can show visual content (before/after, videos, team photos)
    • +You can build brand awareness while generating leads at the same time

The downside? The intent is lower. Someone clicking a Facebook ad isn't as ready to book as someone searching Google. You need a stronger offer and better follow-up to convert them.

Which One Should You Start With?

    It depends on your situation:

    Start with Google Ads if:

    - You have a limited budget and need leads quickly

    • +You want people who are ready to book right now
    • +Your website is set up to convert (clear offer, easy contact form, mobile-friendly)
    • +You have a follow-up system in place to call leads fast

    Start with Meta Ads if:

    - You want to build awareness in your local area

    • +You have visual content to show (photos, videos of your work)
    • +You want a cheaper cost per lead
    • +You have a compelling offer (free inspection, discounted service, etc.)
    • +You're okay with leads that need a bit more nurturing

    What About Running Both?

If budget allows, running both is the sweet spot. Google Ads capture the people searching right now. Meta Ads build awareness and capture the people who'll need a service in the next few weeks.

Together, they create a full funnel:

    - Meta Ads: top of funnel (awareness, new enquiries)

    • +Google Ads: bottom of funnel (ready to book, high intent)
    • +CRM follow-up: nurtures both types of leads until they convert

Without the CRM follow-up, both ad platforms will underperform. The leads come in, but if nobody follows up within an hour, they go cold.

    Budget Allocation

If you're starting with a $500/month budget, here's a rough split that works for most automotive businesses:

    - Google Ads: $300 (60%) — capturing high-intent searches

    • +Meta Ads: $200 (40%) — building local awareness
    • +CRM follow-up: included in your system cost

As you get data, adjust based on which platform is generating more actual bookings — not just clicks.

    The Bottom Line

Google Ads and Meta Ads aren't competitors. They're different tools for different jobs. Google captures demand. Meta creates it. You need both if you want a consistent flow of leads — but more importantly, you need a follow-up system that converts those leads into bookings.
